What You’ll Need
- A metal tape measure for accuracy
- A notepad or phone to record measurements
- A step stool or ladder (if needed)
- A pen or pencil
Understanding the Window Frame Components
- Head: The horizontal piece at the top of the window frame. The top edge of the upper sash rests against it.
- Jambs: The vertical sides of the window frame. Measure between them for the window’s width.
- Sill: The bottom horizontal part of the frame, where the lower sash sits.
Step-by-Step Measuring Guide
1. Measure the Width
- Take three measurements: at the top, middle, and bottom of the window opening.
- Measure from the inside of one jamb to the inside of the other.
- Record the smallest of the three as your width.
- Top tip: Always use millimetres for better accuracy.
2. Measure the Height
- Take three measurements: left, centre, and right.
- Measure from the head (top of the frame) to the sill (bottom).
- Record the smallest of the three as your height.
3. Note the Opening Style
- Record whether the window opens side-hung, top-hung, fixed, sliding, or sash.
4. Count the Openers
- Make a note of how many sections open versus how many are fixed.
5. Take a Photo (Optional but Helpful)
- Snap a quick photo of each window from the inside and outside.
