How to Measure Your Front Door for Replacement

Thinking of upgrading your front door? Whether you’re looking for better insulation, improved security, or a fresh new look, getting the size right is the first step. Here’s a simple guide to help you measure your door accurately for quoting purposes.

As always, we’ll carry out a professional survey before installation – but having some rough measurements upfront can help speed up the process.

What You’ll Need

  • Metal tape measure (for best accuracy)
  • Pen and paper or phone to note your measurements
  • A step stool (if needed)
  •

Step-by-Step Measuring Guide

1. Measure the Width
  • Measure the width of the door in three places: top, middle, and bottom.
  • Measure from the inside edge of one side of the frame (jamb) to the inside edge of the opposite side.
  • Use the smallest of the three measurements as your final width.
  • Pro tip: Don’t include trim or architrave – just the frame opening.

2. Measure the Height
  • Measure from the sill (or threshold) at the bottom to the underside of the head (top of the frame).
  • Take three measurements: left, centre, and right.
  • Use the smallest number for your final height.
  • Note: If your door opens onto a step or external porch, ignore that and measure just the door frame opening.

3. Measure the Thickness (Optional)
  • If possible, note the thickness of your current door.
  • Standard doors are often 44mm thick.
  • Composite doors can range between 44–70mm.

4. Note the Hinge Side and Swing Direction
  • Stand outside your home facing the door and check:
  • Are the hinges on the left or right?
  • Does the door open inwards or outwards?
  • Example: “Right-hand hinged, opens inwards”

5. Take a Photo (Optional but Helpful)
  • A quick photo of the inside and outside of the door helps us understand your setup – especially if you have side panels, unusual frames, or a letterbox.

Extra Tips

  • If you have a fanlight (glass above the door) or sidelights (glass to the sides), make a note of that too.
  • Don’t worry about being 100% precise – this is just for quoting. We’ll take care of the technical survey.
